5 Popular Video Formats Introduction

Nowadays, there are dozens of video formats existing in the video world for the users to choose. For some newers, it will be confused on what each video formats to pick up. So, it is necessary to know learn more about video patterns.

RMVB Format

As the heir of RM format, RMVB format is released based on RM format. One of the advantage is the latter-RMVB format abandons Average Bit Rate and use Variable Bit Rate to compress video data. By Variable Bit Rate technology, video quality is greatly improved while file size is acceptable.

AVI Format

AVI, which is short for Audio Video Interleave, is a special case of Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF).Defined by Microsoft, the avi turnes out to be the most widely used format for video and audio file on a computer.

MPEG Format

MPEG is a method of defining compression of audio and visual (AV) digital data. Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG), is an international compression standard designed for moving images. Its compression rate can reach 50:1 and it is a video standard of good compatible. Currently, MPEG includes three compression standards: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Additional, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 are being developed.

MPEG-4 Format

MPEG-4 (MP4) is a moving picture compression standard which is used for Internet, broadcast, and on storage media. Relative to MPEG-2, MPEG-4 provides improved quality at a smaller size. Currently, the most compression technology of MPEG4 are DivX and XviD. Videos processed by DivX or XviD lose a little quality but the size will be reduced greatly. It provides users a convenient way of movie storage in a common CD-Rom disc, while the quality is better than VCD.

RM Format

RealMedia is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. It includes RealAudio, RealVideo and RealFlash. To transmit and play real-time video files in narrow-bandwidth Internet, Real Media adopts distinct compress rate according to the bandwidth.

Of course, there are many more other existing formats now, and sometimes, you may have trouble in this issue, since some formats are not supported by some devices. We may be in need of some video editor like converter or some software like that.
